Why Pray? Part 4

Prayer is how we get on the same page with God and become a people who hear His Word and act out His will. It’s how we experience His mercy and grace and it’s how we learn to think like God. That is our help in times of need.

Why Pray? Part 4

When we pray, are we just asking God for stuff and having a conversation with Him or is something else going on? There are a lot of reasons to pray. The book of Hebrews, for instance, tells us that it is by “drawing near” to God that we find help in times of need:

Hebrews 4:16

“Therefore let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”

How do we draw near to God? That is what prayer is all about. Prayer is the process by which the follower of God leaves the things of the world behind, places him/herself at His feet and lays down self in order to approach our Lord.

As we find ourselves nearing God, something incredible takes place. Our problems become smaller, our needs become lesser and God becomes everything. In that exchange, mercy and grace are poured out upon us in the form of God’s love. The result is that His will becomes our will and the things that are most important to God are the things that become important to us.

1 John 3:22

“...and whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do the things that are pleasing in His sight.”

Prayer is how we get on the same page with God and become a people who hear His Word and act out His will. It’s how we experience His mercy and grace and it’s how we learn to think like God. That is our help in times of need.
