Victory In Jesus
Eugene Bartlett had always been musically inclined. Born on Christmas Eve of 1885, he began teaching music at an early age.
Eugene was determined to leave his mark on the world. He was much sought after as a music teacher and, at the age of 33, founded the Hartford Music Co. and published the magazine, “Herald Of Song.”
Eugene conducted singing schools throughout the south for twenty years and was well known as a writer. He wrote over 800 hymns, none of which you have ever heard.
None, that is, that were written during his healthy and productive years. He made his mark, here and there, by teaching students and publishing songbooks, but it wasn’t until he was disabled by a stroke that he was able to make a lasting imprint on future generations.
His stroke left him bedridden and unable to move freely. The work that came so easily and effortlessly had now become a labor, taking months for him to complete his final hymn. It was published for the first time in 1939, two years before his death.
It is a song about a Saviour who gave His redeeming blood for us, but the second stanza includes a plea for His healing power followed by a third verse that exults over the sights and sounds of a heavenly home. It’s a song about victory in life, written by a man who could no longer get out of bed. His body was broken and his health was failing but Eugene Bartlett understood what victory is all about. It’s in Jesus.
Here are the lyrics for Eugene M. Bartlett’s “Victory In Jesus.”
VICTORY IN JESUS:
1 - I heard an old, old story
How a Savior came from glory
How He gave His life on Calvary
To save a wretch like me
I heard about His groaning
Of His precious blood's atoning
Then I repented of my sins
And won the victory
(Chorus)
O victory in Jesus
My Savior, forever
He sought me and bought me
With His redeeming blood
He loved me ere I knew Him
And all my love is due Him
He plunged me to victory
Beneath the cleansing flood
2 - I heard about His healing
Of His cleansing pow'r revealing
How He made the lame to walk again
And caused the blind to see
And then I cried, "Dear Jesus
Come and heal my broken spirit,"
And somehow Jesus came and brought
To me the victory
(Chorus)
3 - I heard about a mansion
He has built for me in glory
And I heard about the streets of gold
Beyond the crystal sea
About the angels singing
And the old redemption story
And some sweet day I'll sing up there
The song of victory
(Chorus)
