Why Is Jesus The Only Way To God? (Part 1 of 2)
Here is a question that I hear fairly regularly: "Why is Jesus the only way to God?" Most people seem to believe that there are many paths to God and that they all eventually lead us to the same place.
Jesus never believed that. Jesus once said, "I am the Way, the Truth and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through Me."
(John 14:6)
That seems pretty arrogant, doesn’t it? In a world that values inclusiveness above all else, it seems odd for Jesus to claim that He is the only way to God. What about Mohamed or Buddha or other religions that offer to lead us to God, peace and truth?
While it seems only natural that God would be accessible through many different ways, the issue is not that simple. The problem lies in understanding that we are trying to fix a problem. We all get it, that this world is not perfect. There must be something better than this, right?
Well, the issue we are trying to reconcile is not "Who would I like to follow?" or "Which religion seems best for me?" If that were the case, any religion would be just fine. We could just follow anyone we want. But, that’s not the issue. What we are trying to fix is that dilemma that we are separated from God. How can we be restored to Him? That’s the big question.
If we only see the problem as how we feel about ourselves or whether we can follow a set of rules well enough to “qualify for heaven”, we aren’t going to get very far. You know as well as I do that we are far from capable of living up to the standards and expectations of most religions.
So how do we become reconciled to God? We’ll learn all about that tomorrow.
