Matthew 13:44

Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field; the which when a man hath found, he hideth, and for joy thereof goeth and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field.

I heard that the price of a ticket to the Super Bowl is selling for over $12,000. If you wish to take someone with you it would cost you $24,000. The average yearly salary in Puerto Rico for 2023 was $20,400. In the early years of our marriage, my wife and I paid less than $12,000 for our first house. The closer to the Super Bowl game we get, the price of tickets comes down to a mere $8,000.

Why does a seat at an event that lasts for a few hours cost so much? The answer is in the value placed upon it. The only reason tickets are so expensive is because there are those who are willing to pay it. I am certainly not judging those who can afford to buy expensive things. I am wanting us to consider the value we place upon things in our life, and what we are willing to pay for them.

There are those who seek pleasure, and initially are willing to pay the price until they realize the price has cost them their health, their family, their job, and their self-worth. Others pay the price required for success in the business world, but when it is achieved find they have lost more than they have gained. The world is filled with those who thought they could “afford” the price demanded, but later found it to be too high.

Does God ever think that the price He paid for you and me was too high? The price of His own Son Jesus Christ? How does God react when we turn away from His unconditional love for the things of this world that will one day perish? How does God feel when He says let’s talk, and we say not now, I’m too busy? When God’s love for you and me is rejected for the trinkets that the world offers, God’s heart breaks.

What is the worth of the love that God has given you that has no end or conditions other than believe, trust, and follow? That love is far greater than a Super Bowl ticket and is free to all who believe.
