Truth To Power

Here, Jesus fully affirms what He had previously said about being “the Son of the Blessed One.” He confirms the truth that He will sit in the glorified position at the right hand of God’s throne.

Truth (Written by guest writer David Peterson)

On the night of Jesus’ arrest, He appeared before the Sanhedrin. He remained silent until the high priest demanded an answer. In Mark 14:62 (and in the other three Gospels), it is recorded:

And Jesus said, “I am; and you shall see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven.”

Here, Jesus fully affirms what He had previously said about being “the Son of the Blessed One.” He confirms the truth that He will sit in the glorified position at the right hand of God’s throne. Jesus declares that He will return in glory, “coming with the clouds of heaven.”

The high priest then tore his robes in outrage at what he perceived as blasphemy. He simply could not bear this truth!

Augustine of Hippo once wrote, “Where I found truth, there found I my God, who is the Truth itself.” Augustine understood—both in his mind and his heart—that Jesus is the Truth: He represents it, embodies it, and speaks it perfectly in everything He says.

The 1867 hymn “O Word of God Incarnate” by William Walsham How beautifully captures this same theme of truth, wisdom, and light:

O Word of God incarnate,

O Wisdom from on high,

O Truth, unchanged, unchanging,

O Light of our dark sky,

We praise Thee for the radiance

That from the hallowed page,

A lantern to our footsteps,

Shines on from age to age.

How’s words remind us that Jesus brings wisdom, truth, and light into a dark world.

Let us pray:

Lord Jesus, You are the source of all truth, and we seek Your direction in all things. Lead us into Your truth each day, and help us to see it—even through our own deceptions, pride, and lack of trust. Amen.
