The Names Of Jesus - The Indescribable Name
As we end our series on “Finding The Real Jesus”, we put the graphic imagery of Revelation behind us and we turn our hearts and minds to the written Word and what the Bible tells us about who Jesus is. The image of the glorified Christ is both startling and meaningful but the written and spoken names of Jesus are where the theology of the church is written.
Do you want to know who Jesus is? The first question to ask is, “How does He describe Himself?” In other words, what does He want us to know about Him?
Throughout the pages of the Bible there are about 80-100 names for Jesus. How can we not know the exact number? It depends on how you count. For instance, Jesus is the Prince of Peace, the Prince of Life and the Prince of Kings. Is that one name or three?
He is the Only Begotten Son, the First Begotten of God, the Son of God, the Son of Man, the Son of David, the Beloved Son and the Holy Child.
He is the King of Kings, King of the Jews, King of Ages, King of the Saints and the Only Potentate.
He is the Lamb, the Lamb of God, The Passover Lamb and the Lamb Who Takes Away The Sins Of The World.
That could be twenty names or just four. But, the tantalizing thing is the absolutely brilliant picture that these names paint that tells us how indescribable and glorious He actually is.
We’ll start our journey down this path tomorrow by looking at my personal favorite name for Jesus: The Word of God.
Colossians 3:17
Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father.
