The Names Of Jesus - “The Word”

The Names Of Jesus - “The Word”
John 1:1
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”
Nothing makes me happier than talking about this verse. I could preach a whole series of sermons on it, but I can’t do that here. If there were only one thing I could tell you about this particular name of Jesus, what would it be?
Let me point out this inescapable truth about God. There is nothing more striking about His character and His universe than this: God is a God who speaks.
Let me defend that. God’s great theme that runs throughout all of scripture is His Word. When He created the universe and everything in it, He spoke and it came into being.
When He poured out His Love and Truth to His creation, He did that by speaking to chosen men and women.
To make Himself, His will and His plan of redemption known to mankind, He spoke through His written Word.
When God chooses to interact with His people, He speaks His Word.
And then, when He came to earth as one of us, to live, teach, heal, challenge, touch, love and die with us, He did that through His Living Word.
John 1:14
“And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us..”
To the writers of the Bible, “Logos” (Word) meant more than speaking. The primary idea behind logos was order or reason. The opposite of logos was chaos. The Word of God was not just a type of speech, it was the very essence of all order, structure and being. So, when Hebrews 1:3 talks about Jesus, it says that “He upholds all things by the Word of His power.” Paul goes a step further:
Colossians 1:16-17
“For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.”
Do you understand why I get so excited about this one? Those verse are talking about Jesus, the Word of God. His Word is everything. It is who He is, what He has done and what He has promised. It is the Word of God that accomplishes His will on earth and fulfills His plan of redemption.
That’s who Jesus is.
