The Acts Of Worship - Sing (Part 1)

1 Chronicles 16:9, 23

“Sing to Him, sing praises to Him.”

“Sing to the LORD, all the earth.”

Why is it that singing is such an important part of worship? It’s mentioned twice in this passage as we are instructed to “Sing to Him” and to “Sing to the Lord”.

There is something about music that affects the soul. Music can draw us in and lift us up before our God. But it has also become the greatest spiritual battleground we face. Music can lead us down whatever path it wants to take us.

Music takes hold of the heart of the singer. If the songs are biblical and godly, our singing points us to our God in worship. It pours out our hearts to Him and exalts Him as Lord.

But, the adverse is true, also. Much of our music is focused on the world and our flesh. Have you listened to the latest music of the world lately? Evil is openly celebrated. The music of the world exalts the very sins that enslave us. When we sing that music, we are led into a position of idolatry where sex, violence, drugs, rebellion, power, wealth, abuse and oppression are worshipped as our gods.

Should we be surprised by that? The scriptures hint that the Devil was a musician and his music led one third of the heavenly host away from God. You and I suffer as a result of that fall.

If that seems pretty bleak to you and scares you, that’s exactly how you should feel. Look around you. We are living in a culture that is reeling from the impact of decades of music that leads our young people right into the arms of the enemy of God. Our world is worshipping sin and lust while neglecting God’s command to sing praises to Him.

But, there is good news coming tomorrow. We will rejoice at the realization that singing was created for the purpose of leading us to God and that’s exactly what true worship does.
