Patience - The Strength to Wait
The 4 Hidden Strengths of a Godly Life
James 1:2–4
“Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance.”
Few things reveal more about our spiritual condition than waiting. We don’t like delays or slow progress. We want quick solutions—immediate results. Yet much of the Christian life is lived in seasons of waiting.
It is there that patience is formed.
Patience is much deeper than just tolerating inconvenience. Biblical patience is the steady endurance that trusts God even when life moves slower than we want. God often works there in order to work deeply.
Joseph endured slavery and prison before he became a leader. David was anointed a king long before he ever sat on the throne. God used that time of waiting to make something out of him. Abraham waited decades for the son he was promised. God is rarely in a hurry and He is never late.
Impatience dares us to run ahead of God. Saul offered a rash sacrifice and lost his kingdom. Israel impatiently complained against God and a generation missed out on their promise. We all can make foolish decisions when we forget to wait on God.
Patience produces something invaluable. We learn endurance. Trials expose weaknesses. Waiting develops strength. God uses difficult seasons to remove flaws and smooth out our rough edges.
And, patience reflects God’s character. God is repeatedly described in Scripture as “slow to anger.” How thankful we should be for that! God is patient with our failures and our wandering hearts.
Some of the greatest acts of faith are not dramatic moments of action but quiet seasons of endurance. Waiting does not mean God has forgotten you. Delay is not denial or abandonment. The strongest thing a believer can do is remain faithful while waiting for God to move.
I often ask myself, what areas of my life currently require patience? What might God be trying to produce in me through waiting?
Lord, teach me to trust You in seasons of waiting. Give me patience when life feels slow and faith when answers seem delayed. Help me not to run ahead of Your timing, but to endure with confidence that You are working all things for good. Amen.
