Humility - The Strength to Bow
The 4 Hidden Strengths of a Godly Life
Philippians 2:3–8
“Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves…”
The world admires people who push themselves to the front. We promote ourselves, defend ourselves and make sure everyone notices us. But the kingdom of God operates differently. In God’s kingdom, greatness stoops.
CS Lewis used to say that humility is not thinking less of yourself; it is thinking of yourself less. It’s the willingness to lower yourself before God and to raise others above your own pride and ambition.
Jesus modeled this for us. Philippians tells us that Christ existed in the very form of God, yet He willingly humbled Himself. The Creator washed feet and wore a servant’s towel. The King submitted Himself to mockery, suffering, and even death on a cross.
That’s true strength. Humility is secure enough to serve quietly while pride fights for recognition.
Moses is called the meekest man on earth, yet no other Old Testament figure confronted kings, parted seas, and led a nation like he did. John the Baptist willingly faded into the background saying, “He must increase, but I must decrease.” Their humility did not weaken them; it positioned them for God’s power.
Pride constantly asks:
“What do I deserve?”
“How am I being treated?”
“Why am I not being recognized?”
Humility seeks to honor God, serve others and live like Christ every day.”
Peter wrote: “Humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time” (1 Peter 5:6).
Notice the order: First humility, then exaltation.
God has never hesitated to lift up humble people. But He consistently resists the proud.
The strongest people in the world are not loud, demanding, or self-promoting. They are the quiet servants who have learned to kneel before God. They do not need constant attention because they already know who they are in Christ.
Humility is not weakness. It is strength that bows willingly before God. It is willing to ask, where does pride appear in my life? Am I more concerned with being honored or honoring Christ?
Lord, teach me the humility of Christ.
