New Covenant

The New Covenant embodies grace and peace and the Holy Spirit and re-generation and the knowledge of God and the forgiveness of sin and a new heart and pure fellowship with God and love for God. This covenant was personal and individual.”

New Covenant (by David Peterson at The Rock Of Jesus Church)

While in the upper room, Jesus and the Disciples enjoy His final Passover meal. In Mark 14:22-25 it reads; While they were eating, He took some bread, and after a blessing He broke it, and gave it to them, and said, “Take it; this is My body.” And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, and they all drank from it. And He said to them, “This is My blood of the covenant, which is being poured out for many. Truly I say to you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine again, until that day when I drink it, new, in the kingdom of God.” While also recorded in Matthew 26:26-29 and Luke 22:14-23, this passage is about the Lord’s Supper being instituted. It is also about a new covenant, or a new agreement, whereby Christ sheds His blood as a sacrifice for all believers in remission of their sins.

This is the promise that God will forgive sin and restore fellowship with those whose hearts are turned toward Him.

On this subject, Pastor John MacArthur comments: “What is the New Covenant then? It is the unilateral, irrevocable, unchangeable, eternal promise by God that He will save sinners by forgiving their transgressions and regenerating them from the inside to love Him and obey Him.

The New Covenant embodies grace and peace and the Holy Spirit and re-generation and the knowledge of God and the forgiveness of sin and a new heart and pure fellowship with God and love for God. This covenant was personal and individual.” MacArthur accentuates Jesus’ promise that He will provide salvation to all followers.

The great hymn writer, Charles Wesley, wrote “O God Most Merciful and True” in 1762. Here is the first verse;

O God most merciful and true,

Thy nature to my soul impart;

’Stablish with me the cov'nant new,

And write perfection on my heart.

Wesley reflects scripture about the mercy God grants as we are given covenantal salvation.

Let us pray: Heavenly Father, thank you for your grace and mercy for your promise to save us from our sins through your blood sacrifice. We love you! Amen.
