I Am the Truth
When Jesus declared that He was the Truth, in John 14:6, He made a pretty remarkable statement. He wasn't claiming to be right, or correct or even true. He was claiming to be the actual Source of all Truth.
Let's take a look at what this means. In Hebrews 6:18, we read, "It is impossible for God to lie."
That statement is telling us something about God. It's not saying that God cannot lie because God has no moral failures. It is telling us something about the nature of God. God cannot lie because He is the Source of Truth.
When the Source of all Truth speaks, something happens. Whatever He speaks becomes true when He speaks it. Truth is whatever He says. It is literally impossible to lie. Why? Because God IS Truth.
Here are the implications of that:
If Truth were a person, that person could never be wrong. Ever. Just imagine what it would mean if that person ever spoke. Truth could stand up in a boat on the Sea of Galilee and say "Be still" to a raging storm, and the storm would become still!
Truth could speak to a leper and say, "Be healed", and the leprosy would go away! Blind people could see and the deaf would hear! His spoken Word would actually have power to change things.
When Jesus says, "I Am the Truth", He is not just saying something about His morality, He is telling us who He is at His core. He is saying, "I am God."
1 John 5:20
"And we know that the Son of God has come, and has given us understanding so that we may know Him who is True; and we are in Him who is True, in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life."
