Faith’s Hall Of Fame: Moses Encounters God

Hebrews 11:27

“By faith he left Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king; for he endured, as seeing Him who is unseen.”

In Exodus 3, Moses found himself talking to God. He removed his sandals, approached the burning bush and God told him what was coming. He was going to go back into Egypt to deliver God’s people from slavery.

The 80 year old Moses asked two pointed questions and they are the same two questions every person of faith should ask when they come before God. He asked God, “Who am I?” and “Who are you?” (Ex 3:11-13)

In those questions, the key to great faith is revealed.

Who are we? Well, who was Moses? He was made from dirt and given life by the Living God. That’s why God told him to remove his sandals. The shoes Moses wore were separating him from the ground from which he was made. God alone is holy. Holy means “different” or “separate”.

God wanted Moses to remember that there was only one Holy Being in this encounter. He wanted Moses to understand who was God and who was the lump of clay.

So, who exactly is God? When Moses asked God for His name, the only response he got was, “I Am Who I Am.” That’s how our God wants us to know Him. He’s not giving Moses His name. The name of God would be far too much for Moses to hear. It would contain all that God is and the human mind can’t comprehend that. Instead, God wanted Moses to know Him for what He does.

He is the Lord of Glory, The Deliverer, The Gracious and Merciful God, The Preserver of Men, The Shield of Thy Help, The Beginning and The End, The Shadow of a Great Rock in a Weary Land ... I could go on but there are 935 such names for God in the Bible.

So, here is the lesson of faith that we learn in Moses’ encounter. Our minds and our hearts must know who we are and who God is. Faith grows when we understand that.

To have great faith, you must recognize who you are and then come to terms with who He is. You have to have a sandal-removing moment and be willing to ask yourself the next question: Who is God to me?

Your answer will reveal your level of faith to you.
