Day 35 – The Rod
Psalm 23:4 — “…Your rod and Your staff…”
As a boy tending his father’s sheep, David had probably carried a rod thousands of times.
It wasn’t a walking stick. It was a shepherd’s club—short, sturdy, and carefully shaped to fit the shepherd’s hand. Before leaving home each morning, a shepherd would never think of taking his flock into the wilderness without it. The rod was his protection against anything that threatened the sheep.
That image would have been immediately familiar to David. Yet when he says, “Your rod comforts me,” he’s not finding comfort in a piece of wood. He is finding comfort in what the rod says about the One who carries it.
The Shepherd is prepared.
How often do we face life’s difficulties feeling unprepared? A sudden diagnosis, the loss of a job, a strained relationship or an unexpected disappointment can leave us wondering if we have what it takes to make it through. We quickly discover that we don’t.
But our hope has never rested in our own strength. It rests in the Shepherd’s.
David had learned that lesson well. As a shepherd himself, he had faced lions and bears to protect his father’s flock. Later, as a young man standing before Goliath, he remembered that it was the Lord who had delivered him from those wild animals. David knew that a faithful shepherd does not run from danger. He moves toward it for the sake of the sheep.
That is exactly what Jesus did.
He did not remain at a safe distance while His people faced sin, death, and Satan. He entered our world, confronted our greatest enemies and—through His death and resurrection—secured a victory we could never win for ourselves.
No wonder David says the rod brings him comfort. The sheep sleep peacefully, not because there are no predators in the hills, but because the shepherd is awake.
What made David’s faith so powerful is that he didn’t measure the size of the enemy. He looked at the strength of his Shepherd. The rod reminds us that our Shepherd has never been surprised by the dangers we face, and He has never been found unable to protect those who belong to Him.
