The Shepherd is strong enough to defend His sheep and gentle enough to lead them. That’s why there is both a rod and a staff.
Day 36 – Your Staff
Psalm 23:4 — “…Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.”
If the rod reveals the Shepherd’s strength, the staff reveals His heart.
Every shepherd carried one. It was longer than the rod and curved at one end, becoming an extension of the shepherd’s own arm. He used it to guide the flock along difficult paths, to lift a lamb from danger or to draw back a sheep that had begun to wander too close to trouble.
The staff was a symbol of care, not force.
I can’t help but wonder how many times David had watched a frightened lamb become calm by the touch of the shepherd’s staff. The very object that redirected the sheep also reassured it.
Isn’t that how God works in our lives? There are times when He changes our direction, closes a door or slows us when we are eager to rush ahead. At the moment, we may not understand why. Only later do we realize His guidance spared us from dangers we never saw.
The longer we walk with Christ, the more we learn to welcome His direction, even when it isn’t the direction we would have chosen.
The Shepherd is strong enough to defend His sheep and gentle enough to lead them. That’s why there is both a rod and a staff. He knows when to stand between us and danger, and He knows when to place His hand upon us and guide us with quiet patience.
That is the Shepherd we follow.
Isaiah 40:11
“Like a shepherd He will tend His flock, in His arm He will gather the lambs and carry them in His bosom; He will gently lead the nursing ewes.”
As you look back over your life, you probably recognize moments when God’s protection was obvious. You may also remember seasons when His guidance didn’t make sense until much later. Both were expressions of the same Shepherd’s love. Today, thank Him not only for the dangers He has defended you from, but also for the gentle ways He has led you. His strength and His tenderness have been walking beside you all along.
