Day 34 – A Pause To Consider What We’ve Covered And Where We Are Headed
Before we move any farther, let’s stop for a minute.
David has taken us on an extraordinary journey. He has led us into the darkest valley, acknowledged the reality of death, reminded us that evil is realand then quietly anchored our hearts with one glorious truth:
“You are with me.”
Everything has been building toward that moment. Let’s not fail to notice something beautiful.
At the outset, David delights in what the Shepherd does. He makes me lie down. He leads me beside quiet waters. He restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness. Every blessing reminds us of the Shepherd’s faithful care.
But when he reaches the valley, David’s attention begins to change.
He no longer speaks primarily about the Shepherd’s works. He speaks to the Shepherd Himself.
When we first come to know God, we rejoice in our answered prayers, daily provision, restored relationships and countless acts of grace.
Yet as we continue walking with Him, we discover that the greatest gift He gives us is His own presence.
That is where David now stands.
Only now does David bring our attention to notice something else. The Shepherd has been carrying two things all along.
A rod and a staff.
They have always been in His hands. David simply sees them differently now because he sees the Shepherd differently.
The same hands that lead, restore, and remain with His sheep are also the hands that protect them, rescue them, and keep them safely on the path.
Before we consider the rod and the staff, let’s linger here just a little longer. The greatest comfort of Psalm 23 has never been the tools in the Shepherd’s hands.
It has always been the Shepherd who holds them.
So, as we embark on this next element of the 23rd Psalm, take some time today to recite that psalm over and over. You should have it committed to memory by now. These words will serve you well over the course of your life.
Now … why is the Shepherd carrying that big stick?
