14 Reasons Jesus Went To The Cross - To Adopt You Into God’s Family

Do you remember the parable that Jesus told about the Prodigal Son? That story is beautiful because it tells the story of all of us in our journey to God.

The story goes something like this: a son wants more out of life so he leaves his home and squanders everything his father gave him. He finds out that the world is not so good after all and yearns to return home to his father. (Luke 15:11-32) Now, you may not think that’s your story, but it is. It’s yours and mine. So. What does that have to do with the cross?

We are all are born as God’s children, but sin separates us from Him. When we sin, we are doing exactly what the Prodigal son did. We are leaving our Father to get something better from the world.

Christ went to the cross to be a sacrifice to remove our sin. He justified us and reconciled us to God, creating the way for us not just to be forgiven—but to be brought all the way in as sons and daughters, heirs with Christ. In effect, Jesus, gave us our Sonship back.

Athanasius, a prominent church leader from the 3rd century, wrote, “He became what we are so that we might become what He is.” That means Jesus, the Son, made it possible for us to become sons and daughters by grace.

Ephesians 1:5

“He predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself.”

We are joint heirs in Jesus Christ! Because of the cross, we have become children of the King!

Galatians 3:26

“For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.”
