14 Reasons Jesus Went To The Cross - To Redeem You
God’s grace and mercy can return us to our Creator. How did this happen on the cross? The blood of Jesus covers the sins of mankind allowing us to be in the presence of a pure and holy God.
In the Old Testament, this took place on the Mercy Seat. Once a year, on the Day of Atonement, the blood of a sacrifice was sprinkled on the Mercy Seat. The blood symbolically covered the sins of the people, turning away God’s wrath. The mercy seat was literally the place where atonement was made by the blood.
Now, back to Romans 3:25. When we read that “God displayed Christ as a propitiation by his blood”, the Greek word for propitiation here is hilasterion - the same word used in the Greek version of the Old Testament for the mercy seat!
Romans is telling us that Jesus IS the true Mercy Seat and it is His own blood that is sprinkled. The cross is the ultimate place where God’s wrath is satisfied and where mankind is restored to God.
