With You Always

With You Always (Written by guest writer David Peterson)
Jesus directed His followers to a mountain in Galilee to speak with them one last time. In Matthew 28:18–20, Scripture says:
“And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, ‘All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.’” (NASB 1995)
This passage is commonly known as the Great Commission, where Jesus empowers His followers—including us—to go into the world, proclaim the gospel, and participate in building the kingdom of God. But beyond the command, the passage also contains a profound promise.
Jesus told them—and He tells us today—that He is always with us. What a comfort and blessing it is to know that Jesus watches over His people. Jesus is truly “God with us.”
Matthew Henry, the 17th-century pastor and theologian, once wrote:
“Believers shall have the constant presence of their Lord always; all days, every day. There is no day, no hour of the day, in which our Lord Jesus is not present with His churches and with His ministers; if there were, in that day, that hour, they would be undone.”
Henry expands on the very truth Jesus proclaimed—a deeply comforting promise for every believer.
In 1857, Edwin H. Nevin wrote the hymn “Always With Us.” The first verse reads:
“Always with us, always with us:
Words of cheer and words of love;
Thus the risen Savior whispers,
From His dwelling place above.
With us, when we toil in sadness,
Sowing much and reaping none;
Telling us that in the future
Golden harvests shall be won.”
Nevin beautifully captures Jesus’ promise that He is with us in both good times and difficult ones—when we rejoice and when we struggle.
Let Us Pray
Dear God, please shower Your love, care, and concern over us. Assure Your followers that You love us and that You are with us in times of trouble, challenge, and triumph.
Amen.
