Why Do I Need Jesus?

Yesterday, I wrote about sharing our faith and trying to find out what it is that each person needs. Today, let’s turn it up a notch. Let’s ask the question I hear most from people with whom I share my faith: “Why do I need Jesus?”

Well, that depends on what you want out of life. We all want happiness, we all want good health, we all want purpose and meaning in our lives. You can probably think of other things that are important to you. So, what is holding us back from having all of those things?

To answer that, we have to be able to understand who we are and how we work. That brings us to a word that most people don’t like to talk about very much. That word is sin.

Sin doesn’t seem to bother us too much because—if we are honest—we kind of like our sin. It feeds our desires and makes us happy for a while. That’s why we keep sin around. But, sin is a problem. In fact, sin is THE problem. Here are two Bible verses to think about:

Isaiah 59:2

“...your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden His face from you...”

Romans 3:23

“...all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”

So, we all sin and sin separates us from God. So, the One who designed and made us—the One who knows us best and who has a plan for us—the One who knows what will bring us joy and fulfillment—is pushed out of our lives. How can we find any real and lasting meaning in our lives without a relationship with God?

That, my friends, is why we need Jesus. Jesus is the only way to break down that barrier of sin and restore us to God.

Next: we’ll learn how that is done and why.
