Who Is This Jesus?

In the Gospel of Luke, Jesus asked His disciples a simple question:

Luke 9:18

“Who do the people say that I am?”

Their response was interesting. The disciples answered not by telling Jesus who He was but by telling Jesus who He was NOT! "Some say you are John The Baptist, some say Elijah, some say you are one of the prophets risen from the dead."

People were not sure about Jesus. They really didn’t know who He was. They saw His incredible power to heal people, they watched Him stand up against the authorities and they witnessed the amazing ability that He had in talking to people in a way they had not heard before.

Yet, they didn't know the true implications of those things. No one was able to put their finger on the right answer because they didn’t know what it all meant. So, Jesus made the question more direct and personal.

Luke 9:20

And He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”

He knew what the people thought. What He really wanted was to hear His Disciples say the words for themselves. So, finally, Peter answered and said, “You are the Christ of God.”

Jesus was the long-awaited Messiah, said Peter. The Savior of the world. He was the One that they were waiting for!

Bingo! Jesus would confirm this by saying things like, "I am the Light of the World", "I am the Resurrection and the Life", "I am the Bread of Life." Amazingly, our world still fails to come to grips with who Jesus is.

Great teacher? Check.

Friend of the oppressed? Check.

Make a list as long as you like and Jesus is all of that. But, you will never understand Jesus until you learn who He REALLY is. He is the sum of all of those things and more. And they all add up to this:

John 14:9

“Have I been so long with you, and yet you have not come to know Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father."

Who is Jesus? Those who saw Him had seen God Himself. You do the math.
