Where Is God?

Question: How could God be there and someone not know it?

Where Is God?
Wherever you are right now, take a minute and look around the room. Do you see God anywhere?

Point to Him. Is He over there in the corner? Is He standing near you? Walking by?

I remember learning about the first Soviet manned spaceflight. Afterwards, Nikita Khrushchev said, “Gagarin went into space but didn’t see any god up there.”

I’m afraid that we are missing the point if we think that God can be found that way. God is not something that we can see or touch. God is Spirit and Spirit is not quite the same as flesh and blood. The truth is, God is everywhere ... all around us. He is there all the time and He is never not there.

That doesn’t stop some people from going to extremes to find Him or get away from Him. As soon as Adam and Eve realized that God knew their sin, they tried to hide from Him.

Spoiler alert: It didn’t work.

David explains:

Psalms 139:7-10

“Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence? If I ascend to heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in Sheol, behold, You are there. If I take the wings of the dawn, If I dwell in the remotest part of the sea, Even there Your hand will lead me...”

There is no place that God is not. Yet we struggle to see Him because He is not perceived through our physical senses.

Jacob had an experience that we can all relate to. In Genesis 28, he awoke from a dream in which the Lord had revealed Himself, and he immediately recognized what had taken place.

Genesis 28:16

“Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, ‘Surely the Lord is in this place, and I did not know it.’”

Question: How could God be there and someone not know it?

Well, look around you, again. Where is God? You can see Jacob’s dilemma, right? God is right there in your room, right now. The room is full of Him and yet it looks empty of Him.

God has made a promise to you and me. He said, “I will never leave you or forsake you.” (Hebrews 13:5)

Just because you don’t see Him, doesn’t mean He’s not there. Open your Bible, read, pray and ask Him to make Himself known to you. He will hear your prayer.

God is with us and we can always count on that to be true.
