Day 15: Waters
Psalm 23:2 — “…quiet waters.”
Water is one of the most common images in the Bible, but we can still overlook its importance.
For a shepherd, water meant life. Without it, the flock could survive only a few days. Pastures would wither and strength would fade. Every shepherd knew where water could be found because the life of the flock depended upon it.
David recognized something even greater: the same God who supplied water also satisfied the deepest thirst of the soul.
Throughout Scripture, water is one of God’s favorite pictures of His grace. Isaiah wrote:
“With joy you will draw water from the springs of salvation.” (Is 12:3)
“Ho! Every one who thirsts, come to the waters…” (Is 55:1)
Those invitations were fulfilled in Jesus. Standing during the Feast of Tabernacles, as water was being poured out in celebration of God’s provision in the wilderness, Jesus cried out:
“If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink.” (Jn 7:37)
He wasn’t speaking of physical thirst.
Theologians often describe mankind as having a God-shaped longing—a thirst that nothing in this world can permanently satisfy. We try success, relationships, possessions, entertainment—even religion itself. For a moment they seem to work, but before long we are thirsty again.
Jesus alone offers what He called “living water.” To the woman at the well He said,
“Whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst…” (John 4:14)
Only Christ can make that promise.
Salt water surrounds a sailor in every direction, yet if he drinks it, his thirst only grows worse. The very thing he hopes will satisfy him actually deepens his dehydration.
The world offers substitutes that promise satisfaction but leave us emptier than before. Wealth and pleasure can never quench a thirst they were never designed to satisfy. Only the living water of Christ can do that.
Isaiah 12:3
Therefore you will joyously draw water from the springs of salvation. And in that day you will say, “Give thanks to the LORD, call on His name.”
Every day, the question becomes not whether you are thirsty, but where you are trying to satisfy that thirst. The Shepherd knows exactly where the water is.
