What Is Worship?

If we are going to make the case that worship is the most important thing we do as believers, we really have to settle on what worship is. Then we can start the discussion about how we go about doing it.

Worship, at its most basic meaning, comes from the same root word as worthy. To worship is to say to God, “You are worthy“. In Old English, the actual word was “worthship”. So worshipping is the act of proclaiming and affirming the worthiness of God.

In the book of Revelation, we are given insight into just how important that is. In chapter 4, we get a glimpse into the throne room of God and we see what takes place eternally before Him. The throne of God is surrounded by four living creatures that do one thing forever and ever. They proclaim the worthiness of God.

Revelation 4:8 and 11

“…and day and night they do not cease to say, ‘Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord God, the Almighty, who was and who is and who is to come.’” … “Worthy are You, our Lord and our God, to receive glory and honor and power; for You created all things, and because of Your will they existed, and were created.”

These creatures were created for the sole purpose of declaring the worthiness of God for all of eternity. They have always done that, will always do that and they will never grow tired of their task. Why? Because they are doing exactly what they were created to do.

They are the most fulfilled beings you and I know of. Their very existence teaches us how to live meaningful lives, full of purpose and fulfilled to our greatest potential. We do that by worshipping, just like we were created to do.

Tomorrow - how do we do that?
