Truth (by David Peterson of The Rock Of Jesus Church)
While in His hometown of Nazareth, and while preaching in the synagogue, Jesus quotes scripture from Isaiah in Luke 4:21. The scripture says; “Now He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.” Jesus tells these people who know Him that their hearing of these words mean that Jesus is the Messiah. This revelation shocked them because they knew Jesus who was raised among them. Yet, Jesus spoke the truth and they were not prepared to hear it.
Athanasius, the third century Theologian from Alexandria, Egypt, once wrote: “The Holy Scriptures given by inspiration of God are of themselves sufficient to the discovery of the truth.” Athanasius reminds us of what Apostle Paul wrote in 2 Timothy 3:16 that all scripture is God-breathed. In this context, Jesus is telling all hearers that He is Lord and Savior and in doing so He is sharing the truth.
The great hymn writer, Charles Wesley, wrote “Christ, My Guide” in 1749 but some title this hymn “My Lord, My truth, My Way”. The first verse is;
Jesus, my Truth, my Way,
My Sure, Unerring Light,
On Thee my feeble steps I stay,
Which Thou wilt guide aright.
Wesley reminds us that Jesus is our Lord and He represents truth, and wisdom, and He guides us.
Let us pray: Precious Jesus, remind us to listen to Your words and practice all that You guide us to be. Make us to be “all like Thee. Settle, confirm, and stablish me, and build me up in love.” Amen.
