Burned Bridges (by Tim Klink of Prison Discipleship Ministry)

Jeremiah 33:3

Call unto Me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.

In the ministry God has called me to, I meet many who have no one they can turn to for help. They have done so many things to those who loved them and were counted as friends, that now they won’t have anything to do with them. It is one of the loneliest places a person can be at in their life. They either lash out in anger, trying to attract someone’s attention, or they withdraw into themselves trying to stop the hurt.

When calls for help go unanswered by those who once were there for them, the hurt and anger often become deeper.

God’s enemy, is always quick to fuel this with suggestions that “no one loves them,” or “know one cares.” That is when the questions come asking why God is doing this to them. The devil has put such a spin on things that he has them believing that God hates them, and He is at the root of all of their problems. They will often request a Bible and the Bible study lessons we offer in an attempt to end their hurt. Some find exactly what they are seeking, but others don’t know that Satan is opposing them, and they give up in frustration.

It is such a joy to be able to introduce them to the One who is seeking them, wanting to hear from them, knowing completely what is in their past, as well as in their heart. It is often very difficult for them to understand the great love Jesus has for them because all they have ever known is unreachable conditions of acceptance from others, and the lies that their adversary continually feeds them to keep them from Jesus.

We can fall into the same trap if we are not careful. Even though we have a personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ, we are still susceptible to the feeling of loneliness that comes due to our sin nature. It is in the times when we are confused by what is happening, and cannot find the direction He is leading, that we must go to Him. God will answer us when we go to Him humbly seeking His will. The bridge to Jesus is never burned!
