The Question Every Believer Must Answer
Key Verse: 2 Corinthians 13:5
“Test yourselves to see if you are in the faith; examine yourselves!”
The most unsettling part of my dream wasn’t the first question. It was the second. After I mentioned being a pastor, the person simply asked again: “Are you sure you’re saved?”
That question followed me into the morning. Not because I doubted Christ, but because I realized how quickly I had answered with my title rather than my testimony.
There is a healthy kind of self-examination in the Christian life. Paul tells us to examine ourselves.
False confidence is dangerous. People become confident in their church attendance or baptism. Others place their confidence in their family heritage or their ministry involvement.
But biblical assurance doesn’t come from any of those things. It comes from trusting Christ and seeing His life at work within us. When you ask a true believer why they are saved, eventually every answer leads back to Jesus. That’s because our only hope is Christ.
Assurance is not found in looking at ourselves. It’s found in looking at Him. Remember the Philippian jailer’s question: “Men, what must I do to be saved?” (Acts 16:30)
His question was so simple. But, Paul’s answer was just as direct, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved” (Acts 16:31).
Paul never mentioned positions, accomplishments, reputation or any political party or denomination.
Just Jesus.
When you cross a bridge, your safety doesn’t depend on how you walk or what you know about building bridges. It depends on the strength of the bridge.
Your salvation does not rest on your works, your education or your position. It rests on the strength of the Savior in whom your faith resides.
The best answer to the question “Are you saved?” is the simplest one:
“Yes. Not because I preach. Not because I serve. Not because people think highly of me. I am saved because Jesus Christ died for my sins and rose again and my trust is in Him alone.”
That answer never changes.
Father, thank You that my salvation rests in You and not in my performance. Help me to examine my heart honestly and to find my assurance in Your promises. Keep me near the cross and confident in Christ alone. Amen.
