The Greatest Words Ever Written
Bible study comes in all shapes and sizes. Some people describe Bible study like looking at your city from different elevations. Sometimes you want to get way up in the sky and look at the whole picture. That’s a great way to get some insight into scripture. You can take every part of the Bible and see its relationship to all the other books. We call that the 30,000 ft. view and it’s valuable to do that from time to time.
There are other times, though, when we want to zoom in a little closer than that. Think of yourself in a tower a couple hundred feet off the ground. You can get a nice look at what you are focusing on but you still have some idea of what’s around it. That’s good, too.
But, most of the time, we just get down on ground level and look at whatever is right in front of us. That’s where we do Bible study most of the time.
I’m going to do something different than all that. I’m going to bring out my magnifying glass and zoom in on the tiny details that most of us skip over or miss altogether. In other words, we’re going to go all-in on Psalm 23 and look at this incredible piece of art word-by-word.
You will be amazed at what we’re going to find there. Let’s ask some hard questions. Why is it so meaningful to see God as a Shepherd? Why does David call the Shepherd “mine”? What does he mean when he says “I shall not want”? Why still waters instead of a bubbling creek? What is the “shadow of death” and why is it a valley instead of a desert?
There’s a whole bunch of questions to answer. This will not be for the casual observer and it’s going to change the way some of us read this psalm forever.
So, starting tomorrow, we will set off on this journey. Buckle up for this one. You will be shocked right out of the gate when you learn that the very first word we look at is not even what you are reading.
That’s right—the word Lord is not what you think it is. We’ll look at that in two days. So, I’ll see you here tomorrow as I tell you the extraordinary story of just how important this Bible passage is. And I don’t mean how important it is in the context of the Bible. It is literally the most important and most beloved piece of literature ever written.
