The Piercing Word - Exposing The Heart

Hebrews 4:12-13

“For the word of God is … piercing … and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are open and laid bare …”

The Word of God illuminates our path but the it goes much farther than that. The Light that shines in the darkness shines where it is most dark: deep in the hearts of men and women. John tells us in his Gospel that the Light “enlightens” us.

The book of Isaiah has a fascinating twist on the Light of God. He tells us that the world dwells in darkness but will a great Light would come.

Isaiah 9:2,6

“The people who walk in darkness will see a great Light; those who live in a dark land, the Light will shine on them … a Child will be born to us, a Son will be given to us.”

That Child is called the Word by the Gospel of John - The Word that was with God and was God. The world yearns for that Light to shine in the hearts of men, enlightening them and exposing their true hearts.

It’s God’s Word that opens the heart, laying it bare. The people of earth need it, crave it and call out for it. There is no salvation outside of God’s Word because the heart must be exposed, broken and made new for that to happen. Isaiah describes the state of unredeemed mankind:

Isaiah 59:9-10

“We hope for light, but behold, darkness. For brightness, but we walk in gloom. We grope along the wall like blind men. We grope like those who have no eyes … we are like dead men.”

The only remedy for mankind is the Light of God’s Word. So, God gives it.

Isaiah 59:21 - 60:2, 5

“As for Me, this is My covenant with them,” says the LORD: “My Spirit which is upon you, and My words which I have put in your mouth shall not depart from your mouth…”

“Arise, shine; for your Light has come, and the glory of the LORD has risen upon you. For behold, darkness will cover the earth and deep darkness the peoples. But the LORD will rise upon you and His glory will appear upon you. Then you will see and be radiant and your heart will thrill and rejoice…”

The condition of the human race depends on the Light of God exposing the hearts of all of us, revealing our hearts and our true self.
