The Names Of Jesus - “The Tree”
Psalms 1:3
“He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in its season and its leaf does not wither; and in whatever He does, He prospers.”
In the Bible, there are trees all over the place. There are olive trees, fig trees, almond trees, trees of life, trees of knowledge, shade trees, fruit trees, palm trees, cedars, junipers and even mustard trees - which isn’t even a tree at all.
In Psalms 1, the Righteous Man is compared to a tree, firmly planted by a river. That image is repeated in Psalms 92:12-14; Jeremiah 17:8 and Ezekiel 19:10. Many people think that the Righteous Man of Psalms 1 is none other than Jesus. In fact, the first two Psalms make a very nice Messianic package that intricately details the character of the coming Messiah.
It’s intriguing to think of Jesus as that Righteous One but Isaiah goes even deeper. Isaiah 11:1-10 details a prophecy about the Messiah that leaves no doubt. Jesus is a tree, to Isaiah, but He is much more than that. In just a few verses, Isaiah refers to the coming Mesaiah as a Stump, a Shoot, a Root and a Branch.
He is the whole tree, from top to bottom and start to finish. What does that mean? What’s the difference between all those words? Over the next couple of days, we’ll look at those words and what they tell us about the names of Jesus and who He is.
Isaiah 11:1-2
“Then a shoot will spring from the stem of Jesse and a branch from his roots will bear fruit. The Spirit of the LORD will rest on Him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, The spirit of counsel and strength, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD.”
