The Measure Of A Church - Culture And The Church
I’m going to stay in this series for a while but I feel like I need to address the cultural church. It’s a real thing and we don’t truly comprehend what we are doing to our churches.
I remember hearing Alistair Begg talk about this over a decade ago. He said that after 25 years of churches doing everything they can to look more like the world, they look a lot like the world now. Well, he said that a long time ago and I think we can look around and say, “Mission accomplished”. All this, to serve a God who said these words:
Leviticus 18:2-3
“…‘I am the LORD your God. You shall not do what is done in the land of Egypt where you lived, nor are you to do what is done in the land of Canaan where I am bringing you…”
Time and time again, the resounding command of the Bible is “Do not be like them.” God doesn’t want a church that looks like the world. He wants a church that is different. A church should be a respite from the troubles of the world.
People should walk into our churches and say, “Wow! There’s something different about this place!” If a nonbeliever enters your church and feels comfortable and at ease, your church has failed. They should be drawn to the different people, the sense of worship, the holy fellowship that they do not see anywhere in the world.
If your church is not changing your community, your community is changing your church. That worldliness is death to a church. You are called to be different.
1 John 2:15
“Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.”
