The Meaning of First Fruits

The Harvest of Hope

“But now Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who are asleep.” — 1 Corinthians 15:20

The Feast of Firstfruits wasn’t just about grain — it was a prophecy in motion. On the very morning that the priest waved that first sheaf before God, another scene unfolded just outside Jerusalem: an empty tomb.

Christ rose from the dead on the day of Firstfruits. You probably didn’t realize that, did you? What Israel celebrated for years as a symbol to God, Jesus fulfilled in reality. The first stalk of grain represented the coming harvest; in the same way, His resurrection is the firstfruits of all who will rise in Him. His victory is our promise. His empty grave is our guarantee.

When the Israelites rejoiced over the early harvest, they knew more was coming. Their praise wasn’t for what they saw but for what was sure. So it is with us: even when life feels like winter, resurrection is on the horizon. The risen Christ is the proof that death does not have the final word.

Every sunrise after a dark night, every answered prayer after silence, every heart made new in Christ — these are echoes of that first sheaf lifted high.

Where have you lost sight of the “coming harvest”? Are you living as if resurrection is certain, or as if the grave still wins? Let today be your Firstfruits — an offering of hope that trusts in what God has promised, even before you see it.

“Honor the LORD from your wealth and from the first of all your produce; So your barns will be filled with plenty and your vats will overflow with new wine.” — Proverbs 3:9-10
