The Lord’s Prayer - "Our Daily Bread"
It is pretty obvious that when Jesus refers to our daily bread in the Lord’s Prayer, He is talking about the physical need that we have for food. This verse is why we say grace at the dinner table every day in America. We are supposed to receive our daily bread with thankfulness and joy and with the understanding that God has given us something.
But, anyone who has had any exposure to the teachings of Jesus knows that He uses the word "bread" to refer to much more than just our daily ration of food. The bread that Jesus talks about throughout the Gospels is often a spiritual type of bread like Truth or the Scriptures. In fact, Jesus even told us that HE was the Bread Of Life.
John 6:35
"Jesus said to them, “I am the Bread of Life; he who comes to Me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst."
Centuries earlier, when God's people were homeless and wandering in the wilderness, God miraculously provided bread for them every day. That bread, called manna, was a gift from God. It reminded them that He cared and that He would provide for His people.
God provides bread for each one of us. It is a bread that sustains us in this confused and lost world. Yes, God provides for our material and physical needs but His Word is the bread that we truly require every day.
Matthew 4:4
But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every Word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.’”
Don't start your day without opening His Word and taking something away from it. This is how followers of Christ strengthen themselves in the Lord. The Christian needs to be fed every day in order to grow in their faith. Pray your way through His Word and watch your it happen!
John 6:51
“I am the Living Bread that came down out of heaven; if anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever...”
