The Lord’s Prayer - "Give Us This Day"
In Matthew 6, Jesus sat down with His Disciples to deliver His “Sermon On The Mount”. It would prove to be the greatest sermon ever preached. At some point during the sermon, He was asked by His disciples how they should pray. Jesus made sure to teach them a key concept, without which prayer loses its meaning and impact. We look to God for what we need.
This is a vital aspect of all prayer. It is during our time of praying that we come into the presence of our God and meet with Him. By talking to Him and waiting for His answer, we learn to place our burdens and our needs at His feet.
God is the One Who Provides for us and we come before Him in humble dependence, asking for His divine provision. We must recognize that He is the source of everything we have. Paul, in the book of Acts, said it this way when speaking to the great thinkers of Athens:
Acts 17:25
“...He Himself gives to all people life and breath and all things.”
We have to be reminded that it is God who supplies our every need and when we come to Him, in humility, and put our requests before Him, He will hear our prayers.
2 Chronicles 7:14
“If ... My people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven...”
God is faithful to answer us. Every prayer, every petition, every day. He hears us and He knows our needs. Everything we have is because He gave it to us. He is our Provider.
