The Lord’s Prayer - "Deliver Us From Evil"
Evil? Is there such a thing? Does anyone really believe in evil anymore?
When Jesus walked on the earth, He met all sorts of people. He took time to size up every one of them. Kings, peasants, worshipers, adulterers, wealthy, poor, healthy and lame. Jesus had the power to look into a person and see good or evil.
A rich, young ruler once came to Him with a story about how he had lived a great life and done all the right things. Jesus wasn’t fooled. He knew that his heart was not right.
Jesus saw greatness in an odd assortment of fishermen, tax collectors, students and outcasts, but then He saw the corruption hidden in the hearts of the religious leaders.
Jesus stood in front of a broken, sinful Samaritan woman and told her what was in her past and what she felt in her heart.
Jesus knew evil when He saw it and, amazingly, evil recognized Him. Demons cried out loud when they saw Him.
Mark 1:23-24
“Then a man [with an unclean spirit] cried out, saying, ‘I know who You are—the Holy One of God!’”
How could Jesus see evil? Evil is something that is inside of a person. It lives deep in the heart, not out on the surface of someone. You and I don’t have the ability to see what God sees in a person. He sees the heart, not the outside that you and I look at every day.
1 Samuel 16:7
“God sees not as man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
If we are going to be delivered from evil, we need a Deliverer who knows what evil is and how to conquer it. You can’t be that person if you think that evil does not exist. Jesus knows evil. Better yet, evil knows HIM and it runs from Him in terror!
James 2:19
“You believe that God is one. You do well; the demons also believe, and shudder.”
Jesus, Our Deliverer, can save you from the evil of this age. When we pray for deliverance, we know that He hears us and He knows how to help.
