The Lord’s Prayer - "But Deliver Us"

We all need God. That is the inescapable fact of life. There is no other way to be saved. We are born, we live and we die and our sin remains with us. But our God is a holy God who does not tolerate sin. He does not allow us to embrace sin and dwell in His presence. He wants us to be with Him but we are loaded with sin. David said it like this:

Psalms 51:3

“For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me.”

In Romans 7:14-25, Paul writes about a dual conflict in humans. We want to be with God but our sin keeps us from Him. We try to live our lives without sin but we fail. As Paul says, we don’t do the things we know we should and we keep doing things that we know we shouldn’t. He finishes his emotional discourse by saying, "Wretched man that I am! Who shall set me free from the body of this death?” (Romans 7:24)

He is asking, who can save us? Who will be our Deliverer? King David introduced us to Him, long before He came to earth:

Psalms 18:1-3

“'I love You, O Lord, my Strength.' The Lord is my Rock and my Fortress and my Deliverer, my God, my Rock, in whom I take refuge; my Shield and the Horn of my Salvation, my Stronghold. I call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised, and I am saved."

We do have a Deliverer! God, Himself has saved us from our sin and restored us to Him. The prophet Isaiah wrote that God searched the world looking for someone to “bring salvation” and this is what He found:

Isaiah 63:5

“I looked, and there was no one to help, and I was astonished and there was no one to uphold; So My own arm brought salvation to Me.”

When there was no one to deliver us, when all hope was lost and not a single human was found who was able to save, God Himself became the Deliverer. This is what the Gospel is all about. God reached out to save us, delivering us from our misery and pain. As Paul says in Romans 7:25, "Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!"

We are delivered! Pray a prayer of grateful thanksgiving and tell God how much that means to you. THAT is good news!
