The Lord’s Prayer - "Amen"

I know. You thought we were done with the Lord's Prayer. But, no prayer is complete without a closing word! In this prayer, where Jesus taught His disciples to pray, we finish by saying, "Amen!”

"Amen" is a final stamp on our prayers. It means, "So be it.” We might say it in English as "Now it's in your hands, God.”

In the time of Jesus, it was an exclamation that some people used in worship. When someone was praising God, people would join in by shouting "Amen!” It was like saying, "That's right!" or "I agree with that.”

Some people sealed a pledge or a vow by saying "Amen.” It was a way to affirm a commitment or finalize a contract. When we use it in our prayers, it means that we agree with God and we have so much confidence in His truth that we are binding ourselves to it. We trust our prayers to Him.

Jesus often used the word "Amen.” We usually see it in our English translations in the words “verily” or “truly.” Whenever Jesus said, "Verily, verily I say to you" or "Truly, truly I say" He was actually saying, "Amen, amen.” He was affirming the Truth of God.

When we finish our prayers with "Amen", what we are saying is, "That's right! I believe that God is faithful and has heard my prayer.” This last word in The Lord’s Prayer is telling us to have faith when we pray. Believe that God has heard your prayer and He is in control.

Read the Gospel of John, chapters 14-16. Do you really believe that He hears your prayers? He promises that He will hear us when we pray in His name. I believe Him. That’s why I pray, because I believe in the power of prayer.

“Amen and Amen!”

1 John 5:14

“This is the confidence which we have before Him, that, if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.”
