The Gift of Rebirth — Becoming a New Creation

Yesterday, we pictured ourselves walking backward into the future, trusting God’s faithfulness that we have already seen. Today, we move to the very heart of the new beginning Jesus offers: being made completely new.

The Bible doesn’t speak of self-improvement or fresh starts that we manufacture on our own. It speaks of rebirth.

“Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.” —2 Corinthians 5:17

Not patched up—recreated.

Jesus explained this truth to a religious leader named Nicodemus. He told him that no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is “born again” (John 3:3). Nicodemus was confused. How could someone enter a second time into his mother’s womb? Jesus clarified that He was speaking of a spiritual birth—a work of the Holy Spirit, breathing new life into what was spiritually dead.

Before Christ, we may be physically alive, but spiritually lifeless—cut off from God, driven by impulses we can’t fully control, and carrying guilt we can’t erase. In rebirth, God forgives our past and imparts a brand-new nature. He gives us a new heart—one that actually desires Him.

“Moreover, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you.” —Ezekiel 36:26

Old cravings begin to lose their grip. New affections awaken—love for God, hunger for righteousness, and joy in obedience.

The moment we turn from sin and trust in Christ alone, God makes us alive together with Him:

“But God, being rich in mercy… even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ.”—Ephesians 2:4–5

We rise from spiritual death to walk in newness of life.

As 2026 nears with all its unknowns, this truth is our foundation. The future may be hidden from our sight, but if we belong to Jesus, our identity is not. We are already new creations—children of God, indwelt by His Spirit, and destined for glory.

If you have never experienced this rebirth, the invitation stands today. Come to Jesus. Confess your need. Believe that He died and rose again for you. The old will truly pass away, and the new will come.

Tomorrow: How do we live this out in the real moments of life?
