The Acts Of Worship - Seek (Part 2)

1 Chronicles 16:11

“Seek the LORD and His strength; seek His face continually.”

Have you ever noticed that the Bible never describes the face of Jesus? When Jesus walked on this earth, He did it in a body that we know virtually nothing about. The Bible never mentions His skin tone, the color of His eyes, His nose, ears, mouth, chin or any facial feature at all. We know literally nothing about His physical appearance.

The only description we have of His face is found in Revelation 1. But it still doesn’t reveal the earthly Jesus to us. Instead, John beheld the glorified face of Jesus. He described it as a brilliant light that is incredibly bright, illuminating everything around it. The face of Jesus is brilliant.

Revelation 1:16

“In His right hand He held seven stars, and out of His mouth came a sharp two-edged sword; and His face was like the sun shining in its strength.”

You see, His face is not like other faces. When we look at a face, we expect to learn something about the person we are looking at. The face of Jesus doesn’t reveal who He is. The face of Jesus reveals who you are.

John didn’t expect that. He wasn’t prepared for the trauma of staring into the illuminating light of Jesus’s face, with eyes like “flames of fire”.

John was suddenly exposed. His core was shaken and he was faced with his own mortality. The reality of his sin and his own unworthiness was revealed for what it was and the very next thing we read is that John collapsed “like a dead man.” That is exactly what happened to Ezekiel (Ezekiel 1:28) and Daniel (Daniel 10:6-9) when they, too, looked into that face.

Tomorrow, how the eyes of the Lord affect you and me. The Christian’s response.
