The Acts Of Worship - Glory (Part 1)

1 Chronicles 16:10

“Glory in His holy name.”

There are some words that we use in the Christian world that have a lot of meaning, yet most of us don’t really know what that meaning is. Here’s a great example. Do you really know what glory means?

We use that word all the time but it’s one of those ideas that we can’t really put words to. A lot of times, glory is described as a great light.

Isaiah 60:19

“No longer will you have the sun for light by day, nor for brightness will the moon give you light; but you will have the LORD for an everlasting light, and your God for your glory.”

There are times when glory is described as a cloud or even a fire.

Exodus 24:16-17

The glory of the LORD rested on Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it for six days; and on the seventh day He called to Moses from the midst of the cloud. And to the eyes of the sons of Israel the appearance of the glory of the LORD was like a consuming fire on the mountain top.

Throughout the pages of the Bible, glory is described many different ways. It is beautiful, holy and pure. It is possessed by God and yet we give it to Him. God’s glory can appear to us but when God caused His glory to pass by Moses, it almost destroyed him. God’s glory can come and go and it can be given or received.

It fills the house of God and it is always new. Glory rejoices and it became one of the many names of God Himself. The heavens declare it yet it can be disgraced, exchanged for a lie and cast down.

The truth is that it’s really hard to explain exactly what glory is. We do know, however, that we will understand it some day. Habakkuk 2:14 tells us that there will come a time when, “The earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord.”

So why is it so hard to define glory? We’ll answer that question and come up with a working definition over the next couple of days. More importantly, we’ll learn why glory is so important to us as believers and how it impacts us every day as we walk with Jesus.
