The Acts Of Worship - Giving Thanks

1 Chronicles 16:8 and 1 Chronicles 16:34

“O give thanks to the LORD, for He is good; For His lovingkindness is everlasting.”

For the next several days, we are going to examine a worship service that was planned and prepared by King David, in response to the return of the Ark of the Covenant. David commissioned the best worshipers of his day to construct a nationwide worship service that included 11 amazing elements that you and I can learn from to enrich our own worship experience.

Worship, of course, begins with praise. I’ve heard it put this way: if every time your kids wanted something, would you like it if they just walked up to you and told you what they wanted? No, of course you wouldn’t. Yet, that’s exactly how we approach prayer to God.

Imagine what would happen if your children spent a regular amount of quality time with you telling you how much they love you, thanking you for everything that you provide for them. Wouldn’t that make a difference in your relationship with them?

Do you see how this applies to God? God desires to be praised. In fact, that is what we were created for. Worship begins with praise and praise begins with thanksgiving. Listen to the heartbeat of the Psalms:

Psalms 106:1

“Praise the LORD! Oh give thanks to the LORD, for He is good.”

Psalms 7:17

“I will give thanks to the LORD according to His righteousness and will sing praise to the name of the LORD Most High.”

Psalms 30:4

“Sing praise to the LORD, you His godly ones, and give thanks to His holy name.”

Giving thanks and praising God are the one-two pinch that kick starts worship and brings us into the very presence of God.

Tomorrow, thanksgiving evokes a response. We call upon Him.
