The Acts Of Worship - Call Upon His Name

1 Chronicles 16:8

“Oh give thanks to the LORD, call upon His name…”

Throughout the Scriptures, we read about calling upon the Lord but it first occurs in Genesis 4:26, during the life of Adam and Eve’s grandson, that men “began to call on the name of the Lord”.

Most of us we see that as a type of prayer, but that’s not really what calling upon the Lord is all about. While prayer is present in the idea, to call upon the Lord encompasses much more than that. Both Abraham and Isaac “called upon the Lord” when they went to a special place to worship in a special way after a special event had taken place.

Genesis 12:7-8

The LORD appeared to Abram and said, “To your descendants I will give this land.” So he built an altar there to the LORD who had appeared to him. Then he proceeded from there to the mountain on the east of Bethel, and pitched his tent, with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east; and there he built an altar to the LORD and called upon the name of the LORD.

Genesis 26:23-25

Then he went up from there to Beersheba. The LORD appeared to him the same night and said, “I am the God of your father Abraham; do not fear, for I am with you. I will bless you, and multiply your descendants, for the sake of My servant Abraham.” So he built an altar there and called upon the name of the LORD, and pitched his tent there…

Calling upon the Lord is whole hearted and fully committed worship in response to the realization that God is working in your life.

Tomorrow: how does that affect my understanding of Romans 10:10?
