The Acts Of Worship - Ascribe (Part 1 of 4)
1 Chronicles 16:28-29
“Ascribe to the LORD, O families of the peoples, ascribe to the LORD glory and strength. Ascribe to the LORD the glory due His name.”
In the middle of the worship service in 1 Chronicles 16, we come across the command to “Ascribe”. That’s a word we don’t use very often so what does it mean?
The primary meaning of this Hebrew word (yahab) is “to give”, but it goes a bit deeper than that. There is an element of surrender in it. It can refer to setting something in place or to paying a price.
The English word “ascribe” includes the idea of writing. It means something like writing about God and then giving it to Him in worship. So, what are we saying about God?
The Book of Revelation gives some insight to how this plays out before the throne of God. Let’s take a look:
Revelation 4:10-11
“The 24 elders will fall down before Him who sits on the throne, and will worship Him who lives forever and ever, and will cast their crowns before the throne, saying, “Worthy are You, our Lord and our God, to receive glory and honor and power...”
Those elders are “ascribing” to God. So, what we are to ascribe to Him is glory and honor and power. Over the next three days, let’s take a look at each one of those things and how we can ascribe them to God in our worship.
