Testify to the Truth (by David Peterson at The Rock Of Jesus Church)
Jesus is in chains in front of Pontious Pilate and is being questioned. In John 18:37 it is written; “Therefore Pilate said to Him, “So You are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say correctly that I am a king. For this purpose I have been born, and for this I have come into the world: to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to My voice.”
Jesus informs Pilate, and us, that He came to show people that His kingdom and mission are based on truth. As a follow-up question Pilate then asks rhetorically “What is truth?” John MacArthur offers a simple definition of truth drawn from the Bible: “Truth is that which is consistent with the mind, will, character, glory, and being of God”. Jesus testified to this truth in that everything He said and did reflected Father God’s direction. He said in John 14:6 that He is The Truth. As believers, we do well to follow Jesus’ direction.
Richard Baxter, an English Puritan church leader in the 1600’s wrote; “Before and after you read the Scripture, pray earnestly that the Spirit who wrote it may interpret it for you, keep you from unbelief and error, and lead you into the truth.” Baxter alerts believers of the role of the Holy Spirit who directs us toward the same eternal truth that Jesus testified about.
Caroline Marie Noel wrote the hymn “At the Name of Jesus” in 1870. The first stanza of her insightful hymn is as follows;
At the name of Jesus
ev'ry knee shall bow,
ev'ry tongue confess Him
King of glory now;
'tis the Father's pleasure
we should call Him Lord,
who from the beginning
was The Mighty Word.
Noel’s hymn accurately reflects scripture in that Jesus glorified Father God with His Word and His truth.
Let us pray: Jesus you are the truth and your Word comes from Father God. We hear your shining testimony and it provides us with truth in which we can trust you for eternity. Amen.
