Return to God
Hosea 6:1
“Come, let us return to the LORD.”
That is arguably the most important thing Hosea ever said. He knew more about human nature than most realize. He lived the life of a betrayed husband and endured the scorn and ridicule of that relationship. Yet, even though his wife kept betraying him, he continually took her back—even when he knew he was going to experience that pain again.
Now, let me ask you this: Have you ever walked away from something that was good for you? We all have. It might have been a job, a relationship, or a missed opportunity. Whatever it was, we all have regrets like that which still haunt us. But have you ever walked away from something so big and so important that the day you walked away from it, your life changed forever? I’m afraid I have some bad news for you. The truth is, you have done exactly that.
You have left your source of life. That happens every time we sin, because sin separates us from God.
Isaiah 59:2
“But your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden His face from you so that He does not hear.”
Every time we sin, we turn around and walk away from God. We all live in continuous betrayal of Him. That’s what makes Hosea so hard to read. Hosea is not telling us his story to teach us how to deal with betrayal. We are not Hosea in his story.
We are the unfaithful one.
Ouch.
His book is about us. It shows us the pain and anguish that our sin brings to God every day. Our sin hurts Him. But then, look at this verse:
Romans 5:8
“But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”
That, my friends, is what we call real love. That’s what salvation is all about. As Hebrews 8:12 says, “Our sins are remembered no more.”
Isn’t that amazing? Doesn’t it make you want to return to Jesus?
Here’s a homework assignment for the weekend: Spend time letting God know how much you appreciate Him. He gave everything just to show you His love. He loves us in spite of us. That’s why I returned to Him. That’s why I worship Him!
