Prince of Peace (Written by guest writer David Peterson)
Isaiah prophesied about the Messiah approximately 700 years before Jesus was born. In Isaiah 9:6 he wrote: For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; and the government will rest on His shoulders; His name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Isaiah refers to Him as the “Prince of Peace.” This is because He restores relationships, provides inner peace, and offers reconciliation with God. This title signifies His role in establishing spiritual harmony and peace for believers. Regarding His peace, Jesus said this in John 16:33: I have told you these things, so that in Me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.
The great Christian preacher Billy Graham once said, “Your future does not hinge on the world situation, however grim it might become. It depends on what happened 2,000 years ago at the cross and your acceptance or rejection of the Prince of Peace.” Graham hangs everything on accepting Jesus and the overwhelming peace that He brings through salvation.
In 1848, Edward Caswall translated the Roman Breviary from Latin into English, producing the hymn we now know as “To Christ, the Prince of Peace.” The following are the first and last verses:
V1:
To Christ, the Prince of Peace,
And Son of God Most High,
The Father of the world to come,
We lift our joyful cry.
V5:
Hide us in Thy dear heart,
Jesu, our Savior blest,
So shall we find Thy plenteous grace
And Heav’n’s eternal rest.
Caswall’s translation reveals the results of Jesus’ peace bestowed upon us.
Let us pray: Jesus, our Prince, Your peace calms our anxious hearts, shows us hope in despair, and fills us with joy during troubling times. As we invite You into our hearts, we access Your divine peace every day, empowering us to spread that peace to those around us. Amen.
