Jesus Our Rock

The highest type of godliness will not save you from troubles and trials; it will, in some measure, even necessitate them. But, blessed be God, here lies the gem of the parable or narrative: “It fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.”

Jesus Our Rock (by David Peterson at The Rock Of Jesus Church)

Toward the end of His first sermon, Jesus says in Matthew 7:24-27; “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.” Jesus is comparing obedience with His teachings to building one’s house on an immovable, steadfast, firm rock. Jesus is indeed Our Rock and Refuge when the storms of life strike.

On this topic, Reverend C.H. Spurgeon wrote; “He was a good man and a practical man; yet he was also a tried man. His house was built on the rock, but that did not prevent the rain descending, and the floods coming, and the winds blowing. The highest type of godliness will not save you from troubles and trials; it will, in some measure, even necessitate them. But, blessed be God, here lies the gem of the parable or narrative: “It fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.” It could stand the strain and endure the test, for it had a good foundation.” Spurgeon reinforces that Jesus is Our Rock!

A popular hymn that echoes Jesus’ wisdom is “A Shelter in the Time of Storm” by Vernon J. Charlesworth. Written in 1880 the first verse is;

The Lord's Our Rock, in Him we hide,

A shelter in the time of storm;

Secure whatever ill betide,

A shelter in the time of storm.

Mighty Rock in a weary land,

Cooling shade on the burning sand,

Faithful guide for the pilgrim band-

A shelter in the time of storm.

Let us pray: Jesus, you are our steadfast rock that never abandons us or wavers in the storms of life. We build our lives on your Words, your directions, and your everlasting foundation. Amen.
