Jesus is God (by David Peterson)

Standing in front of His accusers, Jesus explains how He has come to know God and how He honors Him. When they ask Jesus if He has seen Abraham, John 8:58 informs us: Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am.” His accusers then picked up stones in order to kill Him for they considered His statement to be blasphemous. They did not believe that Jesus was God and transcendent of time.

17th century author and minister Matthew Henry provided a commentary on this scripture when he wrote that “Before Abraham was, I AM.” Is speaking about Abraham being a creature, and our Lord as the Creator. I AM, is the name of God from Exodus 3:14. It speaks of His self-existence. Henry summarizes what Jesus said and His accuracy of being as God before the earth began by adding: “He is the First and the Last and ever the same as it says in Revelation 1:8. Thus He was not only before Abraham, but before all worlds as noted in Proverbs 8:23 and John 1:1.”

Frederick W. Faber wrote the hymn “Jesus is God, The Solid Earth” in 1862. The second stanza is;

Jesus is God! the glorious bands

Of golden angels sing

Songs of adoring praise to Him,

Their Maker and their King.

He was true God in Bethlehem's crib,

On Calvary's Cross true God;

He who in heaven eternal reigned,

In time on earth abode.

Faber relates many facts concerning Jesus’ life and that He was the “True God”.

Let us pray: Father God, we are in awe knowing that Jesus has always been and will always be and He existed before Abraham. We humbly accept Jesus’ deity and eternal existence as God. Amen.
