Hearing God In The Silence

When God Is Silent

Hearing God in the Quiet

Jeremiah 33:3

“Call to Me and I will answer you, and I will tell you great and mighty things…”

Sometimes, it’s not that God is silent. He’s just quieter than we expect. As humans, we are looking for something unmistakable. We want clear direction. Obvious answers are always better, right?

God doesn’t always work that way.

In 1 Kings 19, Elijah was exhausted. He expected God to show up in power. As God passed by, Elijah strained to get a glimpse, hoping to see Him.

1 Kings 19:11-12

“And a great and strong wind was rending the mountains and breaking in pieces the rocks before the LORD; but the LORD was not in the wind. And after the wind an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire.”

God wasn’t in any of the places where Elijah expected Him to be. Where was He? Elijah waited, expecting to hear His voice. And then there came a gentle whisper.

And that’s where God spoke to Him.

The problem wasn’t that God wasn’t speaking. It’s that we’re often listening for something louder. Silence slows us down, removes the noise and forces us to pay attention.

Jesus once said, “My sheep hear My voice…”

God’s voice is not always overwhelming but it is always the same. It becomes clearer as we learn to listen.

If you walk into a quiet room after being in noise, it takes a moment for your ears to adjust. At first, it feels like nothing is there. But slowly … you begin to notice what you couldn’t hear before.

The silence of God works the same way. We need to be intentional about creating space today—quiet space—and simply listen.

God often speaks in ways that require you to slow down to hear Him.

What noise might be crowding out God’s voice in your life? It’s a good thing to think about today.
