God’s Word and Power

Some of you who know me well, know that I have favorite subjects that I like to talk about. God’s Word is one of those. The Bible is full of so many inspiring stories and powerful teachings that it is hard to grasp all of it, but my favorite subject is “The nature of God’s Word.”

One of the most incredible things that I have ever read is the story of Jesus on the Sea of Galilee in Mark 4:35-41. While traveling across the sea by boat, a fierce wind came up and threatened to sink the boat.

Jesus, however, was calmly sleeping on a cushion in the stern. His Disciples woke Him and asked Him to save their lives!

The response of Jesus? He stood up and spoke to the wind.

Yes... you read that right. Jesus lectured the wind. He spoke harshly to a storm.

Now, let’s take a minute here to let that sink in. I mean, we have all said things aloud that no one else heard except maybe a few trees, some walls and the wind. But did we ever expected anything to happen when we did that? I certainly didn’t.

Not so with Jesus. When Jesus uttered His Word, things changed. Jesus issued a stern warning to the wind and the sea... and they obeyed.

Mark 4:39

“And He got up and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, ‘Hush, be still.’ And the wind died down and it became perfectly calm.”

That is the power of the Word of God that we are privileged to hold in our hands. That Word has power! Paul once started one of his letters by saying this:

1 Thessalonians 1:5

“For our gospel did not come to you in word only, but also in power...”

If you have a Bible nearby, pick it up. Hold it in your hands. That book - the Bible - is not just ink and paper. It is the powerful, life-changing Word of God!

Why do so many Christians live a life that seems to have no power? Why do people struggle to find meaning and purpose? Let me answer that by asking you this; How often do you read your Bible and how often do you sit in a church and hear God’s Word proclaimed?

There is a direct correlation between your answer to those two questions and the life you live. Are you tired of not experiencing God in your life? Now you know why. Pick up His Word, read your Bible, get to a good church and start living the life God has for you!

1 Thessalonians 2:13

“… when you received the Word of God which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men, but for what it really is, the Word of God, which also performs its work in you who believe.”
